Car hire in Tenerife

If you love the sea, mountains and adventure, Tenerife is the island for you. This is a very special island, which is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a national park and more than 40 protected nature reserves. There are two airports in Tenerife, one in the north of the island and one in the south. Tenerife, at about 100 kilometre in length, is the largest of the Canary Islands. There is an excellent road network, and it takes about an hour to drive from one end of the island to the other. Everyone should visit Tenerife at least once, as it is home to the highest peak in all of Spain: Mount Teide. This dramatic volcano is the focal point of a spectacular national park that you will love. As well as Teide, the island has so many great attractions that we recommend a minimum stay of between four days and a week to relax and unwind on the wonderful beaches. Touring Tenerife by car gives you the opportunity to experience driving on desert roads with a beautiful mountainous backdrop. In Tenerife, as in the rest of Spain, you must drive on the right at a maximum speed of 120 km/h on the highway and 40 km/h in residential areas. You should also bear in mind that cyclists have priority over motor vehicles on roads, and that you must maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists.

Tenerife's long roads make driving appealing and safe. It is possible to tour the island using public transport or motorbike but travelling by car offers considerable advantages. Renting a car gives you flexibility and convenience, allowing you to enjoy the island in comfort and at your own pace. You’ll be able to reach hidden corners that can only be reached with your own vehicle, and you can choose to change your itinerary or stay longer in a particular place as you please.

When renting a car, it’s handy to know where you can park at the different points of interest across the island. In Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, you’ll find numerous car parks, where you can park for a fee. There are several car parks, both public and private, close to the main beaches. When visiting the Mount Teide National Park, you can leave your car in the main car park before making the climb to the peak, which is the highest in all of Spain.

You will find tourist information offices all over Tenerife, where you can obtain information about the island and what you can do during your visit. These tourist information offices are located in the north and the south of the island. In the south, you’ll find them at the Tenerife South airport and in Adeje, Arona, Arico, Candelaria and Granadilla de Arbona. In the north of Tenerife, tourist information offices are found in Buenavista del Norte and La Laguna, among other towns.
