Given that it is a small island, it’s possible to explore most of it within the space of five to seven days. If you have more time, you will be able to enjoy Lanzarote at a calmer pace: with less time, you might miss out on some of its charms. Touring Lanzarote by car gives you the fantastic opportunity to drive through stunning landscapes, on mountainous and desert roads. As is the case throughout the rest of Spain, people drive on the right-hand side of the road. The maximum speed is 120km per hour on roads, and 40km per hour in residential areas. Drivers are required to keep a distance of 1.5 meters from cyclists at all times.

Lanzarote has a good network of public buses, known locally as “guaguas”, which run frequentaly, but a car is the best option for getting the most out of your trip. Renting a private vehicle gives you complete freedom to explore the island, making it easier to reach everywhere you want to visit – especially those that are off the beaten track. There are also no issues should you need to rearrange your plans. Lanzarote has excellent, largely straight roads, which make driving enjoyable as well as safe. While it is cheaper to reserve your car in advance, the average cost with insurance included can be quite affordable at €50-60 per day. You can collect your car at the airport upon your arrival. Motorcycles are another alternative for exploring the island. While there are benefits –such as saving on fuel, and an easier time finding parking spaces – some of Lanzarote’s beaches are more easily accessed by car due to dirt roads.
