Situated on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura, in the municipality of La Oliva, El Cotillo is a picturesque fishing village that combines dreamlike beaches, natural pools, and a relaxed atmosphere. Its crystalclear waters and rocky formations make it an ideal spot for those seeking nature, tranquility, and postcardperfect landscapes.
Exploring El Cotillo by car lets you follow the coastal road (FV 109) with Atlantic views, stop whenever you like, and discover unique corners. A few minutes from the town center you’ll find the famous “piscinas naturales”—pools formed among the rocks—where the water warms in the sun and offers a safe place to swim. Continuing along the shore, you’ll reach the Faro del Tostón, the silent witness to endless sunsets.
A day in El Cotillo is perfect for combining sports, photography, and local gastronomy. Sample fresh fish at one of the beachfront chiringuitos, stroll along the whitesand beaches, and marvel at the color contrasts created by volcanic rocks and sheltered pools of water.

Time on road: 40 min

Here are five mustdo activities to make the most of El Cotillo:
1. Drive the panoramic road from Corralejo to El Cotillo: Take it slow on the FV 109, stopping at viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic. Each bend reveals new vistas of cliffs and ocean expanses that herald the village’s beauty.
2. Take a dip in the natural pools (“charcos”): Park beside the volcanic rock formations and walk down to the calm pools that fill with water at high tide. They’re perfect for swimming without waves and lounging on the warm volcanic rock.
3. Walk along Playa del Castillo and Piedra Playa: Two finesand beaches separated by a rocky islet. Stroll the shoreline, watch surfers challenge the waves, or sit quietly and feel the sand underfoot—if you’re lucky, you might spot monk seals resting on the rocks.
4. Visit the Faro del Tostón and watch the sunset: North of El Cotillo, this centuryold lighthouse stands on rugged cliffs. Climb the 30 steps to the tower for a 360° view of the fishing port below and the Corralejo dunes in the distance. At its base, a wooden platform is perfect for birdwatching. Arrive in time to see the sun merge into the sea.
5. Sample local cuisine by the port: Return to the pedestrian street lined with craft shops and cafés, then head to the small harbor where the day’s catch is unloaded. Choose a beachfront restaurant or chiringuito and enjoy grilled fresh fish, papas arrugadas with mojo, and a glass of Canarian wine as you watch the fishing boats.
