Betancuria

In the heart of Fuerteventura, among mountains and ravines, lies Betancuria, the oldest and most historic town on the island. Founded in 1404 by the conqueror Jean de Béthencourt, this charming corner preserves its colonial essence and is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.

Exploring Betancuria by car will allow you to enjoy its tranquility and beauty as you travel through its cobblestone streets, white houses, and enchanting plazas. Its natural surroundings, protected as the Betancuria Rural Park, will present you with spectacular landscapes and impressive viewpoints. You can visit the Church of Santa María, the Convent of San Buenaventura, or the Archaeological Museum, which tells the island’s pre-Hispanic history.

Just a few minutes from the center, you’ll find the Morro Velosa Viewpoint, designed by César Manrique, from which you can enjoy panoramic views of the island. For food enthusiasts, the visit will not be complete without trying the famous Majorero cheese, recognized internationally. This destination is ideal for a cultural and natural excursion, where you can combine history, tradition, and cinematic landscapes.

Here we propose five must-do activities to make the most of Betancuria:

1. Walk through the historic center and visit the Church of Santa María: Stroll along its cobblestone streets, surrounded by white houses with colonial architectural details. The Church of Santa María is the heart of the town and a must-stop to admire its imposing façade and interior decorated with religious carvings.

2. Visit the Archaeological Museum: Delve into the earliest history of Fuerteventura at the Betancuria Archaeological Museum, where you will discover how the Mahos—the island’s first inhabitants—lived. This space combines authentic archaeological remains, such as tools, ceramics, and utensils, with interactive exhibits that will help you understand their way of life, their relationship with the environment, and their rituals. Ideal for the curious and history enthusiasts.

3. Admire the views from the Morro Velosa Viewpoint: Just 4 kilometers from Betancuria, this viewpoint, designed by the iconic artist César Manrique, will grant you one of the most impressive views of Fuerteventura. From its platform, you can behold a spectacular landscape of arid plains, volcanic formations, and hills that seem to fade into the horizon. The design of the viewpoint, perfectly integrated with the natural surroundings, offers a peaceful space to appreciate the vastness of the island.

4. Discover the Convent of San Buenaventura: Immerse yourself in Fuerteventura’s history by visiting this ancient 15th-century Franciscan convent, founded after the island’s conquest. Although it now lies in ruins, its stone walls, arches, and architectural remnants still retain the essence of its past. Walking through this place is like stepping back in time, as you imagine what monastic life was like in that era.

5. Try Majorero cheese at a local restaurant: Your visit to Betancuria will not be complete without sampling the authentic Majorero cheese, one of Fuerteventura’s most emblematic products. Made from native goat’s milk, its intense flavor and creamy texture make it a true delicacy. At local restaurants, you can enjoy it served in various ways: accompanied by mojo picón, on traditional cheese boards, or even fried with honey.
