Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve

To fully enjoy your visit to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, we suggest the following activities: 

1. Visit to the Gernika Peace Museum: Start your tour in Gernika-Lumo, a town rich in history. Museo de la Paz it is a museum that offers a moving insight into the 1937 bombing and promotes reflection on peace and human rights. It is an essential stop to understand the historical significance of the region. 

2. Hiking to the San Pedro de Atxarre Viewpoint: From the Kanala neighborhood, a moderately difficult hiking route will take you to the San Pedro de Atxarre Viewpoint. The walk takes approximately one hour and offers spectacular views of the Urdaibai estuary and the surrounding beaches. It is a perfect spot for photography and nature lovers. 

3. Exploring the beaches of Laida and Laga: Head down to the coast and enjoy the beaches of Laida and Laga, known for their golden sand and crystal-clear waters. They are ideal for a refreshing swim or simply relaxing while taking in the scenery. Both beaches also have nearby parking areas. 

4. Lunch in Mundaka: Head to the picturesque fishing village of Mundaka, famous for its welcoming atmosphere and gastronomy. We recommend trying local dishes such as marmitako or Bizcaína-style cod in one of its traditional restaurants. After lunch, take a stroll around the port and enjoy the sea views. 

5. Bird-watching at the Urdaibai Bird Centre: End your day at this ornithological observatory located in the marshes of Gautegiz Arteaga. Here, you can learn about the different bird species that inhabit the reserve and observe them in their natural environment. It is an educational and enriching experience for all ages. 

Where to park 

Gernika-Lumo: The town has several public car parks, especially near the center and the Peace Museum. 

Kanala: At the start of the route to the San Pedro de Atxarre Viewpoint, you will find parking areas where you can leave your car during the walk. 

Laida and Laga beaches: Both beaches have nearby car parks, although they can fill up quickly during the high season. It is advisable to arrive early.

Mundaka: The town has parking areas near the port and along the adjacent streets. 

Urdaibai Bird Centre: The center has a car park available for visitors.
