Just 35 km northeast of Bilbao, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an iconic place in the Basque Country, where nature and history merge in a dreamlike setting. This islet, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and a staircase of 241 steps, houses the small hermitage of San Juan Bautista at its summit. Tradition says that ringing the hermitage's bell three times brings good luck and protection.
Gaztelugatxe has gained international fame thanks to its appearance in the series Game of Thrones, where it became the fortress of Dragonstone. Visiting this place by car from Bilbao is the ideal option, allowing you to enjoy coastal landscapes and make stops in nearby towns such as Bakio or Bermeo, known for their seafaring cuisine and traditional charm. Get ready for a hike that, although challenging, will reward you with spectacular views of the Cantabrian Sea and steep cliffs. To avoid crowds, we recommend booking in advance, especially during high season.
