Roque Nublo

Situated in the heart of Gran Canaria, Roque Nublo stands as one of the island’s most iconic natural monuments. This impressive 80‑meter‑tall rock formation is an ancient volcanic monolith located at 1,813 meters above sea level. The surrounding area, declared the Nublo Rural Park, is a protected space offering hiking trails and viewpoints with spectacular vistas.

Visiting Roque Nublo by car allows you to explore not only the monolith but also the charming mountain villages nearby, such as Tejeda and San Bartolomé de Tirajana, known for their traditional atmosphere and local cuisine. The drive itself is an experience, winding through landscapes that shift from volcanic cliffs to Canary pine forests.

Once you arrive, the walking route is easy to follow and well marked. After a 30–45 minute hike, you’ll find yourself in front of this stone giant, surrounded by panoramic views stretching from the valley to the ocean. Roque Nublo is not only a geological symbol but also a place to connect with the nature and spirit of the island.

Five must‑do activities around Roque Nublo:

1. Hike to Roque Nublo: Park at the trailhead and set off on a 30–45 minute hike along a well‑signposted path. The easy‑to‑moderate route takes you through volcanic landscapes and pine forests until you reach the famous monolith. On clear days, enjoy views of the valleys, Pico de las Nieves, and even Mount Teide on Tenerife.

2. Relax and enjoy the scenery: At Roque Nublo you’ll find a natural viewing platform ideal for resting, picnicking, and photographing the dramatic cliffs and sweeping panoramas.

3. Explore Tejeda and its traditions: Just 8 km away (about 15 minutes by car), the village of Tejeda welcomes you with typical Canarian architecture and a charming rural vibe. Wander its cobbled streets, visit the Church of El Socorro, and sample bienmesabe, a local dessert made with almonds, honey, and lemon.

4. Enjoy Canarian cuisine in a mountain restaurant: The area around Tejeda and Roque Nublo is dotted with family‑run restaurants. Try dishes such as watercress stew (potaje de berros), rabbit in salmorejo, or papas arrugadas with mojo picón, served on terraces overlooking ravines and peaks.

5. Stop at the Degollada de Becerra viewpoint: On your way to or from Roque Nublo, pause at this overlook for one of the best panoramic views of Roque Bentayga, the Tejeda ravine, and the Atlantic Ocean—perfect for sunset photography.

Where to park:

Trailhead to Roque Nublo: Free but limited parking—arrive early, especially in high season.

Tejeda: Public parking in the village center.

Mirador Degollada de Becerra: Parking area alongside the road.
